Prof. Dr. Dierk Raabe is an internationally recognized German materials scientist, born on April 18, 1965. After initially studying music, he shifted his focus to Physical Metallurgy and Metal Physics at RWTH Aachen University, where he earned his diploma (1990), doctorate (1992), and habilitation (1997). Following work as a research assistant in Aachen and a visiting scientist at Carnegie Mellon University, his career reached a pinnacle in 1999 when he was appointed Director of the Department of Microstructure Physics and Alloy Design at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research in Düsseldorf, a position he holds to this day. In addition to his directorship at the Max Planck Institute, he is also a Professor at RWTH Aachen University and an Honorary Professor at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
Prof. Raabe’s main contributions lie in the fields of computational materials science, alloy design, phase transformations, and sustainable metallurgy, particularly concerning hydrogen and atom probe tomography. His excellence has garnered significant recognition, evidenced by receiving Germany’s highest science award, the Leibniz Prize in 2004, and the Acta Materialia Gold Medal in 2022. Furthermore, he has been awarded two ERC Advanced Grants (Europe’s highest research grants) and received an honorary doctorate from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in 2022. His commitment also extends to leadership roles on various academic boards and supervisory boards, and he was elected as a member of the US National Academy of Engineering in 2025.
